A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
