Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
